Postdoctoral positions in Chemistry

Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately in R. Tom Baker’s group at the University of Ottawa. Annual salary ranges from $38-42K depending on experience and the one-year positions could include a second year based on performance and mutual interest.

Priority will be given to candidates who can begin work in February or March, 2012. Technical details of the positions:

  1. Practical media and catalysts for ammonia-borane (AB) dehydrogenation In this collaboration with University of Pennsylvania Chemistry (http://www.chem.upenn.edu/chem/research/faculty.php?id=34) and Los Alamos National Lab (http://www.lanl.gov/orgs/mpa/) in support of the US Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Storage Engineering Center of Excellence (HSECoE; http://hsecoe.srs.gov/), liquid AB formulations including ionic liquids and amine-borane fuel blends will be prepared and tested for thermal stability, rate and extent of H2 release, dehydrogenation product solubility, and purity of the produced H2.

The successful candidate will have experience in air-free chemical synthesis and will work closely with another postdoc who is focused on practical catalyst development. He/she will also become proficient in the use of robotic rapid throughput instrumentation within the CCRI.

  1. Synthesis of tricarbaboranes and their metal complexes for transactinide separations In this collaboration with University of Notre Dame Chemical Engineering (http://www.nd.edu/~jfb/) and Los Alamos National Lab (http://pearl1.lanl.gov/external/chemistry/), a series of tricarbaboranes will be prepared along with their corresponding metal complexes. The electrochemical properties of cationic metal complexes will be evaluated in ionic liquid media and samples will be provided to Los Alamos for investigation of their actinide and transactinide coordination chemistry.

The successful candidate will have experience in air-free chemical synthesis and working independently; experience in electrochemistry and main group chemical synthesis will also be an asset.

Baker’s multidisciplinary research group works in uOttawa’s Centre for Catalysis Research and Innovation (CCRI), offering the successful candidate a truly unique research experience. Moreover, uOttawa is located in the heart of the city of Ottawa that offers a distinct multicultural experience with approx. 1.4 million people in the greater area.
