Bridge Training Program

Brief overview

(The information below is adapted from the
Ontario Immigration and the
Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration websites
).

The Ontario government supports programs that can help newcomers get their license or certificate in their profession or trade so that they can work in Ontario.

These programs have been put together by employers, colleges and universities, occupational regulatory bodies, and community organizations. They are called "Bridging Programs".

They help qualified internationally trained individuals move quickly into the labour market in Ontario. They assess your existing skills and competencies, compared to Ontario employer expectations. Moreover, they provide training and Canadian workplace experience without duplicating what you have already learned.

Some bridge training programs offer mentoring opportunities with established professionals to help you become certified or registered in your field.

Each bridge training program is different and may provide you with:

  • An assessment of your education and skills;
  • A clinical or workplace experience;
  • Skills training or targeted academic training programs;
  • Preparation for a license or certification examination;
  • Language training for your profession or trade;
  • Individual learning plans to identify any added training you may need.

If you work in a regulated profession or trade and you are interested in a bridge training program, please refer to either the list of regulated professions or regulated trades.

For programs aimed at other professions and trades or that are not specific to any particular occupation, please refer to this list of other bridge training programs.
